Was Newham pensioner murdered by someone she knew?

POLICE WERE called out to a residential address in St George’s Square, Newham, E7 last week after reports came in that someone had died.

Police officers attended immediately and found a woman. They attempted to administer first aid, but she was declared dead at the scene. Her next of kin have been informed. A crime scene was put in place as officers made inquiries to try to work out what had happened.

A man, 44, was arrested at the scene, on suspicion of murder. He was later named as Richard Clayton of St George’s Square, E7, and charged with murder. He appeared at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court on 19th February and was remanded in custody pending an appearance at the Old Bailey.

Chief Superintendent Dan Card, who leads policing in Newham, said, “This is an incredibly sad incident in which a woman has lost her life, and our hearts go out to her family and friends. Officers are continuing to work with care and determination to understand the full circumstances of what happened. A man, believed to be known to the woman, is in custody, and this is being treated as an isolated incident.”
