Sounds on Sunday: 50 years ago – 1976-13

FIFTY YEARS AGO we were humming along to the hits of 1976. Some have magnificently stood the test of time; others have not. Join us on Memory Lane as we review them on their golden anniversaries.

On 13th July, the Real Thing lost their number one spot to the phenomenon that was Demis Roussos. The winning record was The Roussos Phenomenon – an EP with four tracks. We have chosen just one, which we subjectively designate as the most famous: Forever and Ever.

This was the only time Roussos topped the charts, but he turned out a truckload of albums and singles over the years and was certainly very popular. However, this was not exactly pop. It was much more of the “Easy Listening” genre then so popular on BBC Radio 2 – the older person’s music station. Compare Forever and Ever with last week’s tune from Paul McCartney to reveal the difference.

This is not one of 1976’s best tunes. Have a listen and accept our apologies for 1976 once again. It gets better next week, so there’s something to look forward to.
