The power cut his thousands of residential and commercial properties – particularly in the Shoreditch area. Trains going through Essex Road station were also affected, and electronic signs at Liverpool Street station went blank.

Postcodes affected by the power cut are:
E15, E14, E17, E20, E28
E2 9, E5 0, E8 1, E8 2, E8 3, E8 4
E9 5, E9 6, E9 7
EC2A 3, EC2A 4, EC2M 3, EC2M 4, EC3A 7
IG3 8 – plus some postcodes beginning N, NW or W2.

The power went out at around 11.30am, and UK Power Networks were hoping to restore power by 1pm at the latest.
