US President Donald Trump has claimed that a group of “very wealthy people” are ready to buy TikTok, the popular video-sharing app facing a US ban over national security concerns.
In an interview with Fox News, Trump said:
“I have a group of very wealthy people that want it. I’ll tell you in about two weeks.”
The move comes after the US passed a law in 2023 requiring TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, to sell the platform or risk being banned in the country. US lawmakers argue that TikTok could share American user data with the Chinese government — an allegation TikTok denies.
Although Trump was previously a vocal critic of TikTok during his first term, he has since softened his stance. The platform played a key role in youth outreach during his 2024 re-election campaign, and he now supports keeping the app operational in the US — as long as it’s under American ownership.
The deadline for the sale has been extended multiple times by Trump’s executive action, drawing criticism from some in Congress. The latest deadline is now 17 September 2025.
Trump also said he believes Chinese President Xi Jinping will allow the sale to go ahead:
“I think he’ll probably do it,” he told Fox.
TikTok has already challenged the law in the US Supreme Court — and lost. A previous deal to sell the app collapsed earlier this year amid tensions between Washington and Beijing over tariffs. It’s not yet clear whether the current group of potential buyers mentioned by Trump are linked to that earlier deal.
So far, TikTok has not publicly responded to Trump’s latest claims.
