THE UK BANGLADESH District Cup, sponsored by Islami Bank Bangladesh, has completed the first day of play – and entertaining games at Seven Kings Park didn’t disappoint.

The day began with teams uniting to back the ‘Bowl out Racism’ campaign by Capital Kids Cricket. Group A – consisting of Sylhet, Dhaka, Habiganj – and Group D – with Chattogram, Mymensingh and Cumilla – got proceedings underway for the three day tournament.

Sylhet defeated tough opponents Dhaka and Habiganj to become the first team to reach the last four. Cumilla followed up by seeing off Chattogram and Mymensingh to set up a semi showdown with Sylhet. With an 80% chance of rain forecast, the organisers were relieved that the heavens didn’t open and lead to disruption in play.

Cumilla Captain Md Tanvir Ahamed said, “We have really enjoyed the day and are grateful that this is a platform that enables us to perform with the best, making new friends and meeting old ones. Congratulations to all our teams for participating.”

District Captain Sayfur Rahman added, “Enamul Haque has shown great leadership to lead the boys today. Cumilla are a gifted team and well capable of lifting the trophy. It’s mission accomplished today but we are under no illusions of the huge task ahead.”

Groups B and C will play their fixtures tomorrow, Wednesday.
