THE YEAR 2022 was one of achievement for London Sportif, and they celebrated with a glittering awards ceremony in central London.

The glittering event was hosted at Portcullis House, Westminster, by Apsana Begum MP (Poplar & Limehouse) and hosted by Minara Meghna Uddin. Special guests on the night included Tower Hamlets Speaker Shafi Ahmed and Camden Mayor Nasim Ali.

President Ibrahim Khalil spoke of the club’s success. “Last year we won five championships across London,” he said. “Cricket leagues and the managers, coaches and players have made us all proud.” Treasurer Atikur Rahman added, “Congratulations to all our award winners. You have set the benchmark high for those who will follow you.”

Badminton was introduced in 2022, and the tireless work of volunteers has resulted in hundreds of players taking up the sport for recreation and to improve fitness. Badminton co-ordinator Muhi Mikdad commented, “We promote fun and active participation, and I am pleased to report that we have done fairly well on both counts. This year we will do our best to do even more to engage people.”

Club Manager Kalim Uddin concluded, “We are a family here, and we share a passion to serve our community through sports. Our activities bring people together and promote wellbeing. I’m deeply proud of our achievements.”

There was a special award for Taj Accountants for sponsorship of the Club throughout, as well as recognition for Sunna Musk, Everard, and Crystal Tyres and Bodywork.

London Enterprise Academy headteacher Ashid Ali was unanimously awarded the Annual Community Award for promoting and accommodating London Sportif activities, which have benefitted hundreds of young people.

London Sportif was established in 2017 in the East End. The organisation was created to target both youth and adults through different sports activities. The club now boasts three sports clubs – badminton, cricket, and football – and all activities and games take place regularly, during the week and at weekends.

The overall intention is to reach out to marginalised sections of the community, to provide sporting opportunities to BAME communities, people with disabilities and women.
